CMS Releases Medicare Telehealth Trends Data

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released data that highlights trends in the use of telehealth services between January 1, 2020 and March 31, 2022.  The data allows for analysis of telehealth utilization by quarter, state and various demographic characteristics.

The data for the report comes from Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) Part B claims data and Medicare enrollment information. The Medicare Telehealth Trends Report shows an increase in the percentage of Medicare users receiving a telehealth service since the beginning of the pandemic. During 2020 48% of Medicare beneficiaries received a telehealth services, this decreased to 34% in 2021, but remains higher than pre-pandemic reports. The report also includes telehealth trends by race, ethnicity, sex, age group and rural/urban.
