Extension for ACA Premium Subsidies Moves to Senate

On January 8th, using a “discharge petition” procedure, the U.S. House passed legislation that would revive enhanced ACA premium subsidies for three years, rebuffing opposition from GOP leadership. Seventeen Republicans crossed the aisle to join every voting Democrat in support of the measure, with a final vote of 230 to 196 – Representatives Max Miller, Mike Carey and David Joyce joined in the bipartisan effort to pass the measure.

The bill is not expected to be passed in the Senate, but a bipartisan group of senators, that includes Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, is working on a compromise bill that would still extend subsidies. Initial drafts of the compromise bill included a two-year ACA funding extension with income limits, and a $5 per month minimum payment. At this point an agreement appears unlikely. The Ohio Council will keep members informed of any developments in this space.
