HHS Releases Behavioral Health Roadmap for BH Integration

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a Roadmap for Behavioral Health Integration. The Roadmap was crafted to advance the President’s Strategy to address the national mental health crisis through healthcare integration.

The Roadmap provides an overview of the approach HHS is taking to drive toward integrated care centered on the three pillars of President Biden’s Strategy and highlights programs and policy actions to achieve that goal. HHS is committed to advancing this country toward providing all Americans a full spectrum of integrated, equitable, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and person-centered behavioral health care.

The HHS Behavioral Health Roadmap outlines steps to strengthen system capacity, connect Americans to care, and support Americans by creating healthy environments by addressing major challenges to BH integration, including:

(1) Structural Support for Siloed Care

(2) Stigma and Mistrust

(3) Limited Adoption of Technology

(4) Inconsistent Use of Data and Evidence

(5) Insufficient Investment in Promotion and Prevention

(6) Insurance and Financing Limitations

(7) Workforce Challenges

(8) Inequitable Engagement of Underserved Populations

HHS agencies are advancing the HHS Roadmap alongside important efforts already underway such as the HHS Overdose Prevention Strategy and a new three-digit crisis line (9-8-8).
