HPIO Report: Leveraging Medicaid to Support Housing & Nutrition in Ohio

The Health Policy Institute of Ohio has released a new report titled "Leveraging Medicaid to Support Housing and Nutrition in Ohio.”

The report includes information about the federal Medicaid health-related social needs (HRSN) framework, options available for covering clinically appropriate, evidence-based housing and nutrition services through the Medicaid program, and next steps for Ohio leaders to support the financing of HRSN services through Medicaid.

To continue this work and utilize the information from the report, HPIO is convening a multi-sector Health-Related Social Needs (HRSN) Workgroup that is:

  • Building knowledge about Medicaid policy and amplify options for financing HRSN services, including housing, nutrition and case management services
  • Identifying opportunities and challenges related to Medicaid financing of HRSN services, including the capacity, data and infrastructure needs of local organizations and state systems
  • Identifying an approach or approaches that Ohio can take to finance a set of HRSN services through Medicaid, increase data sharing, and elevate best practices to ensure access to those services

The HRSN Workgroup is currently exploring the approaches identified in Part 3 of the "Leveraging Medicaid" report, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each option, and working toward a consensus recommendation for Ohio. We will keep you informed on the work of this group and future opportunities for input this fall and winter.
