New OhioMHAS Community Assessment Planning Process

The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) is working with The Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPIO) to modernize and align the community behavioral health planning process with the state health improvement plan and community planning process used by the local health departments, hospitals, and ODH. OhioMHAS shared the updated plan and process earlier this year and it requires the boards to conduct an assessment every 3 years resulting in the development of a plan that includes community partners. This will be an electronic plan and will be a standardized process with standardized indicators and must include health equity as an overall theme throughout the plan and planning process. OhioMHAS has been working with the boards to understand this new planning process and the required population health indicators. Boards are starting this new planning process now and must complete their assessment and new plan by the end of January 2023. Providers should expect to hear from their boards related to this new planning process and development of the community plan which will be available online upon completion.

As part of the community planning process, OhioMHAS has shared newly available information by county available on their website under County Assessment Data Profiles. These county profiles include general population information and demographics, including sex, age, and race/ethnicity. Community environment and economic indicators are also included, detailing the county’s poverty and unemployment rates, median income, and education level. Finally, the profiles include primary diagnosis, utilization of mental health services, and BRFSS data. This information will aid the community planning process to ensure there is a focus on population health and the service needs and gaps for the entire community.
