OhioMHAS Releases Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Fact Sheets

The Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) has released two fact sheets related to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The first fact sheet, targeted at future and expected parents, focuses on prevention of FAS, covering the risks of consuming alcohol while pregnant. The second fact sheet, targeted at caregivers of current children, focuses on recognizing the signs of potential FAS so that children who may have been exposed to alcohol in utero can receive appropriate treatment.

FAS Disorders is an umbrella term used to describe disorders that result from alcohol exposure during pregnancy. Of all substances, alcohol produces the most serious effects on the brain of a fetus, including heroin, cocaine, and marijuana.

OhioMHAS encourages partners to utilize these fact sheets within their practice to help identify FAS or prevent it before it starts.
